The employment visa process
Offer and work permit
The employer issues an offer and applies for a work permit — through MOHRE for mainland companies or the free zone authority.
Entry permit
An entry permit allows the employee to enter the UAE, or to change status if already in the country.
Medical and biometrics
The employee completes the medical fitness test and Emirates ID biometrics.
Residence and contract
The residence is issued and the employment contract is registered.
Documents usually required
- Employee’s passport copy and photograph
- Attested educational certificate for certain job titles
- Signed offer letter or employment contract
- Company trade licence and establishment card
- Health insurance for the employee
Employer obligations
Employers must keep work permits and residence visas valid, provide health insurance, register employment contracts and, for mainland companies, pay salaries through the Wage Protection System (WPS). We help you stay compliant throughout the employment relationship, including renewals and cancellations.

Can the employee start work before the visa is issued?
Employees should only start work once they are legally permitted to do so. We advise on the correct timing for each stage of the process.
What happens when an employee leaves?
The work permit and residence visa must be cancelled, and end-of-service obligations settled. We manage the cancellation process for you.
